Connect a live coaxial cable from your cable service provider to your cable modem first check that the wire in the center of the cable s connector is centered straight and clean.

Connect an ethernet cable to the ethernet port on your modem.

For example cable internet comes into your house via a coaxial cable whereas connecting to dsl requires you to connect your modem to a filter which is then plugged in to any phone jack.
